Types of Dental Emergencies

Knocked-Out Tooth

Getting a tooth knocked out causes considerable damage to the tooth and the surrounding area. But there’s a chance we can save the tooth if you get it to us quickly enough.

If your tooth gets knocked out, we recommend taking the following actions:

  1. Call our office immediately at (618) 236-0501.
  2. Pick up the tooth by the crown, being careful not to touch the root.
  3. Rinse the tooth under warm water.
  4. If it doesn’t hurt too much, place the tooth back in its socket. Otherwise, try to hold it between your cheek and gums. If you can’t place the tooth in your mouth, keep the tooth in a cup of milk or saliva to prevent it from drying out.
  5. Get to our office as soon as possible.

Lost Filling or Crown

Crowns are meant to last a long time, but sometimes they can come loose and fall out. If your crown falls out, make an appointment with us as soon as possible by calling (618) 632-0501

After calling our office, you’ll want to:

  1. Keep the crown in a cool, safe place until your appointment.
  2. Clean the crown and use dental cement from a local pharmacy to replace it.
  3. If you lost your crown, use dental cement on the tooth to reduce discomfort.
  4. Avoid using any kind of glue on your teeth or the crown.

A Cracked or Broken Tooth

A cracked tooth is highly susceptible to decay. And it’s often painful, especially if the damage extends down to the root. The only way to fix your tooth is to schedule an appointment at Corner Stone Dental right away by calling (618) 632-0501

After calling to schedule your appointment, you can:

  1. Rinse your mouth with lukewarm water, removing any loose tooth fragments.
  2. Apply gauze to the area if there’s bleeding.
  3. Place a cold, damp dishtowel on your cheek to minimize swelling and pain.
  4. If you can’t see us immediately, cover the area with over-the-counter dental cement.
  5. Use pain relievers if necessary.

Loose Teeth or Tooth Pain

If you have an adult tooth that’s loose due to damage or decay, it may still be possible to save it. But if there’s severe pain or damage, you may require root canal therapy to preserve the tooth. Call us immediately at (618) 632-0501 so we can get you the assistance you need.
